BERSATU must follow clear channels, including submitting a formal letter, if it wants to engage in alliance talks with UMNO, according to UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
“If they truly want to cooperate, they shouldn’t keep raising the issue without a formal request.
“How can it be discussed within UMNO without an application? So far, there have been no discussions at the Supreme Council level regarding the proposal by Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
“If Bersatu wants to cooperate with UMNO or even rejoin UMNO, they should submit a letter to enable formal discussions,” he said at a press conference today.
Last week, Hamzah expressed openness to cooperating with UMNO, citing shared ideological roots in championing religion, race and nation.
Speaking on a podcast hosted by former de facto law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, Hamzah emphasised Bersatu’s readiness to collaborate for a greater purpose, despite leadership differences.
He revealed that former MIC and MCA leaders have joined Bersatu, with many ex-Barisan Nasional members applying to join, particularly non-Bumiputeras.
Hamzah highlighted Bersatu’s inclusivity, noting that its associate wings are now integral, with leaders holding positions equivalent to vice-presidents. He advocated expanding associate membership to boost interest, fostering unity within the party and Perikatan Nasional. — May 3, 2025
