airasia Super App now hooks up 700 airlines but are there takers?

IT may be music to the ears of air travellers and holidaymakers that the airasia Super App continues to expand its flight and hotel offerings by partnering with more than 700 international airline brands flying to over 3,000 destinations and promoting thousands of hotels worldwide.

But after their recent fall-out with AirAsia X Bhd over ticket refunds with passengers who have credits with the budget airline are likely to get back only 0.5% of the amount owed to them, one wonders if would-be air travellers/holidaymakers would be attracted to the airasia Super App.

This is despite the app being merely a springboard linking potential passengers to more than 700 airlines which fly to more than 3,000 destinations – and not necessary ‘forcing’ them to fly AirAsia X unless of course, they choose to book their flight on board AirAsia X or sister airline AirAsia for that matter.

Recall that tens of thousands of AirAsia X passengers who have waited close to 18 months for a refund since the imposition of the maiden movement control order (MCO 1.0) on March 18, 2020 were left in a lurch with a pathetic 0.5% offer under the carrier’s proposed debt restructuring exercise which will be put to vote on Nov 12.

According to AirAsia X, the exercise – if approved – will be a full and final settlement and the company will not be liable to any legal action from any creditor after that. However, the budget carrier warned that AirAsia X is expected to go into liquidation if it fails to get the nod.

“I wonder why other airlines still trust them after such mess,” commented a customer who has spent RM800 to purchase a return ticket with AirAsia X for his Indonesian maid in early 2020. “What happens if minorities reject its restructuring on Nov 12? Is AirAsia taking the place of AAX?”

Starting its journey as an online travel agent (OTA) two years ago, the airasia Super App claimed that it has among the world’s top airline brands as partners.

Some of its newest partners include Air Canada, Air France, Air Mauritius, Bamboo Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, flydubai, Go First, KLM, Mahan Air, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Philippine Airlines and the US Bangla Airlines.

Meanwhile, hotel partnerships have also continued to grow with over 300,000 hotels now available on the super app.

With these expanding collaborations, airasia Super App users can now secure great value travel deals to many destinations outside of AirAsia’s network, including across Europe, Oceania, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas.

“In just over two years, we are now one of the top three leading online travel agencies (OTAs) in ASEAN based on website traffic with over 100 million average page views monthly,” airasia Super App CEO Amanda Woo pointed out.

“What gives us a unique advantage is the fact we are the only OTA that also owns an airline which has allowed us to leverage on our experience with flights to ensure lowest prices guaranteed on many select offerings.

“We also have access to a wealth of big and rich travel data as we have always been a digitally-driven business since day one 20 years ago.” – Oct 28, 2021
