AirAsia warns of scam using Fernandes’ name

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Group Bhd has warned of a scam on Facebook that has linked its founder and group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes’ name to a fictitious foundation offering opportunities to assist in projects in exchange for its membership.

The group, in a statement, said it has not established any other foundation other than its official AirAsia Foundation and the mentioned “Tony Fernandes Foundation” is in no way linked to AirAsia or its group CEO.

“Any message purporting to be from Tony Fernandes or Mark Kelvin or sent in relation to a ‘Tony Fernandes Foundation’ is fraudulent.

“The public is advised to be cautious and always refer to AirAsia’s official social media channels for the latest company news in respect of such matters,” it added.

The airline urged the public to keep in touch with AirAsia’s official communication channel when in doubt or to report suspected scams involving the group.

It also stressed that it will never request from the public personal data or details without specific and lawful measures in place, and warned of legal action against individuals or groups who purport to use the AirAsia brand fraudulently or commit identity theft. – April 13, 2020, Bernama
