AirAsia’s Kamarudin, wife hospitalised for COVID-19 in the UK

THEY say tragedies strike in pairs and this is exactly what is happening at AirAsia Group Bhd.

Already beset with the aviation industry slowdown, it is understood that one of its key co-founders is down with COVID-19.

According to The Vibes, AirAsia Group Bhd executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun and his wife Datin Siti Munajat Md Ghazali have tested positive for COVID-19 in the UK.

Citing a source close to the matter, the news portal said the prominent couple are in the country to send their daughter to university.

The source further revealed that Siti Munajat is on ventilator support while Kamarudin’s condition is stable.

It is understood that the couple could have contracted the coronavirus three to four days ago, and that the couple have been in London for about a month.

Checks by The Vibes on Kamarudin’s Instagram account revealed that he had travelled to London in late September.

Checks on his Instagram account also found that he had received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in August 2021.

In separate news, AirAsia’s long-haul budget arm AirAsia X (AAX) is set to meet its creditors on Nov 12 to resolve its RM33.6 bil debt.

Coincidentally, AAX sparked fury on Tuesday (Oct 19) after proposing to refund just 0.5% of total cost paid for a ticket, effectively diminishing prospects of a possible refund for an estimated 450,000 AAX customers. – October 22, 2021
