Another Umno leader quits, Shah Headan leaves UPM board

AS the country’s political crisis mounts, another Umno leader relinquishes his Government job, making him the fourth party leader to do so.

Balik Pulau Umno division chief Datuk Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah announced yesterday that he was quitting from his position as a board member of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

“I would like to resign from my post as a board member of UPM and director of UPM Holdings Sdn Bhd, effective immediately.

“With that, I would like to humbly state my appreciation to the minister for her support during my tenure in both organisations,” he said in a letter to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad.

It is to note that Noraini herself resigned yesterday, citing loyalty to her party’s decision.

Recently, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the party was pulling out support from the Government, citing mismanagement of the pandemic response and top leadership’s insolence towards Istana Negara.

Despite receiving unanimous support from its supreme council, the move created deep divide within Umno, between those aligned to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Zahid.

Yesterday, over 31 MPs from Barisan Nasional (BN) announced that they will stay with Muhyiddin, including those who earlier supported Zahid.

Among those had left their posts so far include Lenggong MP Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Umno vice president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. – Aug 7, 2021
