WITH the anti-hopping law tabling getting delayed once again, Law Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar himself voiced frustration on the matter.
“I’m a member of the Cabinet so I have to abide by their decision. My personal feelings about it doesn’t count.
“But it is frustrating. We worked on this for eight months. Of course, there are gaps but everyone knows I’m unhappy (with the decision),” Free Malaysia Today reported him as saying two days ago.
However, netizens were less diplomatic over the matter and took to social media to vent out their frustrations as well.
Leading the foray was UMNO supreme council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, who urged the Government to be firm on the matter despite opposition from within the fold.
(I was have never seen a minister voicing his displeasure against his own Cabinet team openly like this before. What was unusual back then has become a norm now. A resolute Government is a strong Government. Stand firm on your decision. The world is watching)
Sharing his views, user Mohd Ali Khalil added:
(This is politics at its worst. It’s obvious now that a unity Government will not succeed in administering the country. The best way to resolve this now is to dissolve the Parliament)
Echoing Ali’s sentiments, netizen Rosli Jaafar retorted:
(Just dissolve the Parliament. Let the people decide on this)
While Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan are seemingly cooperating to get the anti-hopping bill tabled at the Parliament, the opposition to it mainly stems from Perikatan Nasional (Perikatan), who urged Putrajaya to “fine tune” the proposed legislation.
It is to note that Perikatan’s head honcho party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia switched their allegiance from Pakatan in 2020 and formed Perikatan Nasional to administer the country with BN.
A substantial number of Bersatu MPs “hopped” from UMNO and PKR which include Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, Senior Minister (International Trade and Industries) Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.
Disgraceful “frog” supporters
Yesterday, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, a Perikatan member, said the anti-hopping law need not be rushed as its details must be ironed out.
“(The bill) must be scrutinised. We cannot rush in this matter. There are reasons for such laws. If the reason is for good, we cannot object.
“It comes down to details… If the party is wrong, (you can’t expect an MP) to continue to be with the party, even if it is PAS,” he was reported as saying.
On that note, user Tengku Shaiffuliazan said it was despicable for politicians to support party hopping despite the damage it causes on the people’s confidence in the democratic system.
(It’s odd that there are some who still support these “frogs” despite how people are getting sick of such dirty tactics. The Prime Minister must remain firm on this)
Netizen Pokcik Zamri remarked:
(There is nothing to be proud of the current UMNO Government. They can’t even make a decision) – April 9, 2022
