Anwar and Kit Siang honour Karpal Singh’s legacy, emphasise reform and unity

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim paid tribute to the late Datuk Seri Karpal Singh, describing him as a loyal friend and a staunch advocate for the Constitution at the “Reminiscing Karpal” event in George Town.

Anwar highlighted Karpal’s unwavering support during challenging times and his commitment to justice and good governance.

Anwar said, “Karpal remained a steadfast friend who stood by me during challenging times and was committed to the struggle until his last breath.”

“Karpal had placed the rule of law, judicial independence, democracy, human rights, and justice on a high pedestal. We learn in Cabinet that the challenge is tough but not insurmountable.

“I have said to Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang (former DAP adviser) that we are here for a purpose, and we are determined to make sure Malaysia matures as a democracy. We will continue to fight and defend the rights of every single citizen of this country, whether majority or minority.”

Meanwhile, DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang emphasised Karpal’s lasting impact on Malaysian politics, calling for the unity government to honour his legacy by improving Malaysia’s Social Progress Index ranking and upholding justice.

“The next three years are probably the most critical for the country, whether we regain our position as a great world-class nation or we continue our decline and end up as a failed, divided and kleptocratic state,” he said.

Events commemorating Karpal included the Karpal Singh Legacy Walk and the Honouring Karpal Singh Forum, reflecting his influence on justice, the rule of law, human rights, and good governance.

Lim noted that Karpal would be pleased with DAP’s recent by-election victory and Anwar’s ongoing efforts to lead Malaysia towards institutional reforms and unity. – June 30, 2024
