Anwar leaves it to party to decide on contest of his post as president

PKR president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has left it to the party’s Central Leadership Council to decide whether to contest the president and deputy president positions in the upcoming May elections, stating that he will not interfere.

“Let them decide. I won’t interfere. Let democracy take its course – whether they contest or not, it’s up to them,” he told reporters briefly today.

Some in the party are lobbying for a no-contest of the top posts in the party.

The idea was first mooted by PKR International Bureau chairman Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin. He was reported as saying that PKR might not contest the positions of president and deputy president, which are currently held by Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli.

According to the party’s constitution, the upcoming term would be Anwar’s last if he chooses to defend the position. — Feb 15, 2025
