PAKATAN Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has raised concerns over the racial rhetoric whipped up by certain “desperate” parties with vested interests especially at a time when the country is on the verge of forming a new government.
“The effort to establish a responsible and stable government should not end in chaos as the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Orang Asli, and Sabah and Sarawak tribes are peace-loving Malaysians,” he said in a statement last night.
The PKR president further welcomed Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani’s warning to social media users against uploading content that threaten public safety and order.
This is after the online public had brought up clips by youths on TikTok bringing up the May 13, 1969 racial riots and violence after the 15th general election (GE15), most of them directed against PH supporters.
In a statement on Monday (Nov 21) night the top cop told social media users to stop misusing the platforms to spread content that are considered provocative in nature as it will cause public disturbance.
He said stern action will be taken against users that attempt to threaten public safety and order under the Communication and Multimedia Acts and Penal Code.
The race to Putrajaya still hangs in the balance as no coalition or party won the simple majority of 112 seats in the Dewan Rakyat.
After the tallying of votes over the weekend, PH and its partners have won 82 seats, followed by Perikatan Nasional’s 73, Barisan Nasional’s 30, Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s 23, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah’s six, Warisan’s three, Parti Bangsa Malaysia and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat’s one each, and two independents.
Istana Negara yesterday had extended the deadline for parliamentarians to submit a prime minister candidate and the coalitions which would form the federal government.
Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Seri Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin reiterated in a statement that all political parties and coalition leaders must notify Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun of their decisions before 2pm today. – Nov 22, 2022
