Are the Malays racist? A heartwarming video shows that unity thrives among the harsh stereotypes

WHILE the internet can be a place of dark comedy, hurt and ridicule, there are times when a heart warming story would surface to redeem humanity.

And in Malaysia where race and religion plays a huge role in dividing the nation, a recent video couldn’t have come at a better time.

In the video, an Indian man addressed an issue about whether the Malays were being racist.

According to him, he decided to have roti canai for breakfast at a shop in Taman Medan. He was about to sit at a table by the side of the road when the owner called him to come inside as it was hot there.

“Everyone who was sitting there was Malay except me,” he noted. But the moment that took the cake was when he went to the counter to make payment. There he was informed that someone already paid for his food.

“Just because of one individual, we cannot conclude that a race is being racist,” he said, adding that if the Malays were racist, no other races would be able to live here in peace.

His heart-warming message has since garnered quite a number of replies and feedback from netizens.

“Actually the people of Malaysia can be united but the politicians have the agenda of breaking us apart,” said @EHuzir.

“Is this video for Akmal?” wondered @vincentcheemeng, who is obviously referring to UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who has been riding on the upside down flag issue since forever.

Another netizen made a snide comment stating that Malaysians were not racist, only the Talibans. Since the Talibans are in Afghanistan a far way away, is he hinting at some political party instead?

Also, @notfaillingyet said that sometimes, a kind soul in these shops would pay for everyone. “If they see a member of the uniformed body, they will at times, pay for them too,” he said.

Prompted by the camaraderie, @equeen_esmae further inquired about the location of the shop in Taman Medan, adding that she would like to have breakfast there tomorrow.

Sadly, the brief video did not reveal the location of the shop. Regardless, Taman Medan is a small place and with a bit of exploration, we are sure our resourceful netizens will find said shop. —Aug 25, 2025
