THE Government’s decision to appoint Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as chairperson for the National Recovery Council (NRC) is utterly disappointing, said PKR.
“When he was prime minister, Muhyiddin failed to respond effectively to contain COVID-19, be it healthcare, economy or education matters.
“I dare say we are in this predicament right now because of him,” its secretary general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail lashed out, in a statement.
Earlier today, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali announced that Muhyiddin would be chairing the NRC. The decision was agreed upon by the Cabinet and Istana Negara was made aware of it. The position is equivalent to a ministerial rank.
The new Government led by newly-minted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob also courted brickbats after he retained almost all of the previous faces in his new Cabinet line-up.
Unimpressed with the recent turn of events, Saifuddin queried Ismail Sabri on whether he appointed Muhyiddin to the powerful post just for the sake of political expediency.
“The Pagoh MP imposed an Emergency to supposedly contain COVID-19. Instead, daily infection numbers became more serious by end of the stipulated period.
“In fact, Muhyiddin ended the Emergency without tabling its ordinances at the Parliament despite repeated decrees from Istana Negara.
“Finally, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong reprimanded Muhyiddin’s team for misleading the Parliament, triggering his ouster from power,” the former minister noted.
On the latest appointment, Saifuddin said that it would only add another layer to the bureaucracy as Muhyiddin would need to present NRC’s proposal to the Cabinet for further scrutiny.
“Does this mean Ismail Sabri lacks confidence of his Cabinet team? Can someone tell us how Muhyiddin’s proposals are going to be any different from what he did during his premiership?
“Would Muhyiddin be objective when carrying out his tasks or do everything he can to protect his legacy? Until when do ordinary Malaysians have to suffer just for the sake of certain people’s political survival?” the Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP asked. – Sept 4, 2021.
