DEWAN Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun today recused himself from deciding on a motion seeking to censure Law Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun for allegedly disrespecting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“I have received a motion on the matter on July 29 from Ipoh Barat MP, M Kulasegaran. As everyone knows, Idrus is my brother.
“Therefore, I will abstain myself from making any decision on the matter and leave it to my two deputies,” he said in a statement.
Last week, Law Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan shocked other MPs when he said that the Government had revoked the Emergency Ordinances (EO) on July 21 itself, prompting the MPs to question whether the Istana Negara had consented to it.
While Takiyuddin was coy on the matter, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong offered a rare rebuke on Takiyuddin and Idrus.
His Majesty said he was displeased with Takiyuddin for misleading the Dewan Rakyat, reiterating that the monarch had clearly stated to the Kota Bharu MP and Idrus during a virtual meeting on July 24 that the EO must be tabled and debated at the august house.
The Agong added that he had yet to give a royal assent to the revocation as well.
On that note, Azhar said the decision on Kulasegaran’s motion would be decided by his deputies’ and stressed on their seniority, with Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon taking the lead over Datuk Azalina Othman Said.
“And I will not interfere in their decision over the said matter,” he stressed. – July 31, 2021
