DEWAN Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun denied claims by a media outlet that he had dismissed motions by MPs seeking to remove him from the chair.
“My office did receive motions for my removal. However, I have issued letters to the MPs who sent the motions stating that I will not make any decision on the matter as there is conflict of interest.
“Therefore, I have referred the matter to my deputy, Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon for further action,” he said in a statement.
Yesterday, Malay daily Utusan Malaysia claimed that Azhar had dismissed 15 motions from various MPs calling for his removal from the Speaker’s post.
The report added that the motions were supposed to be debated at the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting, scheduled from Sept 13 until Oct 12.
Touching on the matter, Azhar stressed that the report by Utusan Malaysia was untrue and had elements of innuendo, adding it was published with an intention to tarnish his reputation.
“I have never interfered in matters pertaining to the motions mentioned. In fact, I’m also oblivious on whether my deputy had made any decision on it or otherwise.
“Therefore, I will seek legal advise soon before pursuing the matter further,” he remarked. – Sept 2, 2021
