TRANSPORT Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook announced that the government will launch a national decarbonisation roadmap for the aviation sector in September. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and boost the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
In a recent speech at the ministry’s monthly assembly, Loke described the roadmap as a comprehensive action plan designed to enhance efficiency in the aviation sector and contribute to global efforts in carbon emission reduction.
“The new initiative could contribute to various new economic sectors, such as renewable energy.
It will be a policy and guide on how we can become a more efficient nation and contribute to the global reduction of carbon emissions.
The Cabinet has approved the implementation of this decarbonisation blueprint, which will involve collaboration with airlines and airport operators. The plan aligns with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) guidelines.
Loke noted that the blueprint was developed with input from various airlines. The final version will be discussed with stakeholders before its official launch.
The blueprint was completed with the input of many airlines. We will discuss the final version and once we finish our meeting (with stakeholders), we will launch the blueprint.
Earlier this year, the minister announced that airlines would have the option to impose minimal additional fees to offset their carbon emissions, although this would not be mandatory.
