Babel gym @ KLCC catches fire for the 2nd time in 20 months

A FIRE HAS broken out in fitness sanctuary Babel in Suria KLCC at 11.31pm last night (May 1), the second such incident since August 2022.

Nevertheless, the fire was swiftly contained due to the activation of the building’s firefighting system combined with immediate response from emergency services, including the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (BOMBA) and the Emergency Response Team (ERT), according to a statement by Suria KLCC Sdn Bhd.

“BOMBA arrived at the mall at 11.48pm and successfully extinguished the fire. No casualties or injuries were reported,” the shopping complex’s PR &Communications manager Sherina Khairi pointed out.

“We are diligently working to address any remaining concerns and ensure the safety and well-being of all patrons, retailers and staff.”

Added Sherina: “In view of the incident, Babel is temporarily closed for business until further notice but the rest of the mall remains operational.”

 

Recall that a crowd were forced to evacuate Suria KLCC and PETRONAS Tower 3 due to a fire that broke out at the Babel gym on Aug 21, 2022.

Based on Suria KLCC’s official statement, a small fire broke out in Babel Gym around 5pm. Fortunately, the automated fire system triggered and kept the situation under control.

The in-house response team managed to respond  within 10 minutes while all shoppers in the vicinity were evacuated before the firefighters arrived.

The Fire and Rescue Department which received a distress call around 5.21pm that day had mobilised 13 firefighters with two fire engines from the Jalan Tun Razak and Titiwangsa to the scene.

The Sun reported that it took the firefighters 10 minutes to put out the flames and the fire destroyed 80% of the gym’s sauna facility.
