AN MP has called for the disclosure of CCTV footage to prove the Federal Court chief registrar’s claim that the Kuala Lumpur court complex bail counter did not close early.
According to Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, the CCTV footage was the only way to prove the chief registrar’s claim over the matter, adding that the footage is important to prove that bail counter staff did no wrong.
“This is a serious allegation and the court complex bail counters cannot close as they please. In this case, it would be better if the CCTV footage at the bail counter be disclosed to determine the bail counter’s actual closing time on that specific day,” Lim said in a statement.
Yesterday (April 24) the Federal Court’s chief registrar’s office (PKPMP) denied reports that the bail counter at the Kuala Lumpur court complex had shuttered early at 2.53pm last Thursday instead of 4pm as expected.
This had resulted in six individuals not being able to post bail. As it was a long weekend, the six were forced to spend Friday to Sunday in custody until bail was finally processed on Monday.
PKPMP in a statement had said the counter was open as usual and 10 accused in the case were allowed bail by the court, but only four bailors were present at the counter to process bail on the said day.
According to PKPMP, the presence of bailors to process bail for the accused is part of a procedure that must be adhered because their presence enables the court to know the identity of the bailor who is responsible for the bail.
The process also is to allow the counter to explain (verbally) to the bailor, of the terms, conditions plus the responsibilities of the bailor throughout the bail period. – April 25, 2023
