Batu MP wants a long-term solution to land subsidence in KL

BATU MP P Prabakaran has urged authorities to find a long-term solution to the ongoing land subsidence issue in Kuala Lumpur particularly around Jalan Masjid India.

“This is a safety issue for traders, so there needs to be a special discussion between traders, DBKL, Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), and other relevant agencies to update traders on the progress of this issue.

“Now, the area behind Jalan Masjid India is also showing signs of subsidence, which is serious. Therefore, there must be engagement between traders and DBKL to prevent further incidents like what happened with Vijayaletchumi,” he said.

This problem has persisted for seven years without a concrete resolution, raising concerns about the safety of traders in the area.

Prabakaran stressed the need for discussions between traders, DBKL, Indah Water Konsortium, and other relevant agencies. He also pledged to help traders voice their suggestions to the authorities to address this issue effectively.

Since last Friday (Aug 23), fear has been growing among locals on Jalan Masjid India whenever they step outside their homes or workplaces.

That morning, an Indian tourist fell into a sinkhole in front of Malayan Mansion. Thousands of people have walked over that very spot countless times, and it’s not uncommon to see people sitting on the bench next to the sinkhole during the day.

On Fridays, the area becomes even more crowded as thousands of Muslims attend prayers at Masjid India, extending their prayer mats into the surrounding streets. – Aug 31, 2024
