Bersatu using spike in food prices to undermine the PM, Najib alleges

PARTI Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is using soaring food prices as a reason to undercut Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, former premier Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak claimed.

“Perikatan Nasional (Perikatan) and Bersatu propaganda pages on social media have launched incessant attacks against Ismail Sabri.

“And they are using the rising prices of goods as an issue to do it, despite inflation already going up steadily during the premiership of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin,” he said, in a Facebook page.

Last week, the public took to social media to vent out frustration over rising prices of vegetables across Malaysia.

For example; cauliflower prices shot up more than 100% – from RM7 to RM16 per kg while Chinese cabbage (choy sum), a Malaysian staple, has increased from RM3 to RM9 per kg in the past two weeks.

Former Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, three days ago, blamed the situation on “half-baked lockdowns” imposed by the previous administration and urged the Domestic Trade and Consumerism Affairs Ministry to act on it, while Najib himself had urged locals to take up jobs in the agriculture sector to meet demand for workforce.

On that note, the Pekan MP urged Ismail Sabri to exercise caution when dealing with the matter as the ministers in charge of handling the issue were mostly from Bersatu.

“The Economic Affairs, International Trade and Industries, Agriculture and Food Industries and Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministries are controlled by Bersatu leaders.

“I find it peculiar that Bersatu keeps criticising the Government for rising food prices when it was their own leader (Muhyiddin) who came up with policies that triggered this problem.

“And I have made several suggestions to address the problem in April. Why isn’t anyone taking it up?” Najib queried. – Nov 30, 2021.
