A by-election (PRK) for the Ayer Kuning state seat must be held following the passing of its incumbent, Ishsam Shahruddin, as the 15th Perak State Assembly has not yet reached the three-year mandate period.
BN Perak has begun early preparations to retain the seat, even though the Election Commission (SPR) has not set a date for the by-election.
BN Perak chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad discussed the matter with BN chairman and UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Saarani stated that BN would not wait for SPR’s announcement but would start campaign activities immediately.
He will meet with the Tapah UMNO division’s committee to discuss preparations despite the party still mourning Ishsam’s passing.
The late Ishsam, who had been Tapah UMNO division chief since 2018, won the Ayer Kuning seat in the 15th General Election (GE15) in November 2022 with a majority of 2,213 votes.
Under Article 36(5) of the Perak State Constitution, the Speaker of the State Assembly will notify SPR to conduct the by-election, which must be held within 60 days of the official notification. —Feb 23, 2025
