BN sec-gen denies Cabinet reshuffle aimed at strengthening Zahid’s position

BARISAN Nasional (BN) secretary-general Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir has refuted claims that the recent Cabinet reshuffle was orchestrated to bolster the position of UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Dismissing the notion, Zambry emphasised that the reshuffle was solely within the authority of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“It has nothing to do (with Zahid), because we need to understand that it’s the sole authority of the prime minister to build his (Cabinet).

“I’m sure (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) has made the right evaluations in reshuffling (the Cabinet),” said Zambry, the former foreign minister who was given the higher education portfolio in Tuesday’s (Dec 12) lineup change.

In response to concerns raised by Bersatu’s Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan who suggested that redesignating UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan as Foreign Minister might weaken his standing within the party, Zambry maintained that the Cabinet restructuring was a routine practice aimed at enhancing the government’s administration and was not driven by political motives.

He further expressed confidence in Anwar’s discernment in executing the reshuffle, asserting that the focus was on implementing necessary measures.

“As the PM has mentioned, our focus is on the things we need to implement. The goal of the Madani government is to serve the rakyat as well as we can.” – Dec 14, 2023
