THE Barisan Nasional (BN) Supreme Council has unanimously expressed its agreement to back the Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim-led coalition government.
BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said this at a Supreme Council meeting held at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTC KL) last night, which was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also BN chairman, and attended by all BN component parties.
He said the meeting made a resolution on BN’s commitment to jointly develop and continue to implement the people’s policy agenda, and called on all leaders from various walks of life to maintain unity and harmony to ensure political stability in the country.
“The BN Supreme Council has also been informed about the party’s preparations for the six state elections, namely Kedah, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor, and Negri Sembilan,” Zambry said in a statement shared on the BN Facebook page.
“Discussions also involve the cooperation model between BN and parties in the unity government.”
His statement comes amid rumours of an alleged coup, which is reportedly manoeuvred by Perikatan Nasional (PN) to topple the government.
The Vibes, in a report dated April 24, said there are talks within the political sphere of a fresh plot to unseat the Prime Minister that could involve the forcing of by-elections.
The news portal alleged that some BN MPs are currently being wooed by “certain key individuals” and are persuaded to take part in a “do-or-die mission” to quit their party and sacrifice their seats.
Word on the street is that they would then seek re-election under the opposition banner.
For context, under the current anti-party hopping law, any MP who resigns or ceases to be a member of their party will lose their seat in the Dewan Rakyat, triggering a by-election.
According to the report, should the BN MPs win, they will be able to form a new government – with the help of MPs from Sabah and Sarawak – and install PN leader Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister, again.
However, the rumours were rubbished by Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.
Calling such allegations baseless, he said there are “no such negotiations on the matter”, nor have there been any discussions with BN MPs nor any other MPs in the government bloc.
Similarly, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong had also denied any knowledge of such attempts to unseat the current government. – April 28, 2023
