Body shaming is ugly, but so are some lifestyle choices

BEING a huge person in the modern world is a real challenge. Besides inviting ridicule and disapproval from the cruel masses, huge people are tempted, day and night, by the food industry that blasts irresistible ads to keep the consumption going.

So those on the grueling quest to trim their massive frames know how difficult the journey can be.

Perhaps, a doctor best sums up this Malaysian predicament in a light-hearted post on threads, featuring one of his confused patients who was having trouble losing weight.

According to him, his female patient who was 126 kg claimed she didn’t eat much. But when asked, she revealed the shocking truth.

The doctor claimed that among other things, her breakfast consisted of six to seven pieces of bread, two plates of nasi lemak and five pieces of snacks.

Apparently “not eating much,” was a subjective statement here. The post has since drawn the attention of numerous netizens, receiving over 226 comments and 167 shares.

The topic further prompted many others to share their stories and opinions regarding this messy topic that is obesity.

Netizen yovitast added in the comment section that the two biggest lies people tell themselves is that people think they eat too little but keep gaining weight.

The other was that they eat so much but never gain weight.

Also, scharious said people who were obese usually don’t realise they were obese until someone takes a video of their body or when they mingle with the skinny people.

On a lighter note, thealhafiz pointed out a hilarious conversation he had with a cleaner lady who said she loves to eat fruits.

When asked about the type of fruit she loves, the cleaner responded that it was durian, which happens to be high in calories.

Many others have since chipped in to offer their advice on losing weight.

Netizen myinnervoiceisscreaming, for example, advised people to refrain from midnight snacking and cut down on sugar, among other things.

sahara.islammovaa decided on a more extreme measure.

Another netizen claimed leptin resistance was the culprit behind obesity.

Note that leptin is a hormone the body fat releases to help the body maintain a person’s weight on a long-term basis.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, it does this by regulating hunger and providing the sensation of feeling full.

Reversing leptin resistance requires targeted lifestyle and dietary adjustments that lower inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, and help the brain properly recognise satiety signals.

Away from the dieticians and impromptu health guide, twinkie.101 said it was inappropriate for the doctor to be posting such private information on social media for public scrutiny.

Likewise, friends and family members should learn the difference between expressing genuine concern and making someone feel like a walking tub of butter.

Of course, weight is not the only indicator of health, and thin people are not automatically healthy.

A person can have a perfectly respectable waistline while having the cardiovascular fitness of a rusty lawn mower. Jokes aside, losing weight is not a one-size-fits-all exercise.

Some people need medical intervention, others need professional guidance, while many simply need to make more conscious decisions about what goes into their mouths.—Nov 5, 2026
