Such is the verbatim expression by motormouth Amanah’s election director Mohd Sany Hamzan who caused a stir in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday (Aug 11) with a cynical statement that “only Malays can plunder the nation’s wealth/money belonging to the rakyat”.
The overzealousness of the first term Hulu Langat MP during the special sitting debate on the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the Tabung Haji (TH) Board eventually prompted deputy speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor to invoke the Standing Orders 36(10)(c) against the former for using words that could hurt the feelings or spark hostility between one race and another in Malaysia.
Amid warning of stringent action, ie suspension from attending Dewan Rakyat sittings for 10 days under Standing Orders 44 or six months in more severe cases unless he retracts his earlier statement, Sany hesitantly did so albeit by correcting his generalisation of “all (Malay Muslims) to “a few”.
Bootlicking demeanour
However, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) lawmaker faced intense backlash from his brethren with former Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (ISMA) president Aminuddin Yahaya chiding that “luckily he spoke in parliament” given the privilege of legal immunity.
“If he had done so outside (the Dewan Rakyat), there could be hundreds of police reports lodged against him,” the Gabungan Nasionalis (GN) chairman penned on his Facebook page which attracted 17.7K likes, 8.8K comments and 1.1K shares from the predominantly rightist fraternity.
“This MP might have gone to the extent of shooting off his mouth or felt threatened, thus causing him to say that it’s fine to rob or steal so long as one is a Malay and Muslim while Chinese and Indians can’t do so. This is clearly an insult to Malays and Muslims.”
A check on the comment section of Aminuddin’s FB post revealed that infuriated netizens subject Sany to severe condemnation with a wide range of disparaging remarks made against him.
“Whose dog is this? Who let the dog out?” mocked one commenter, an insinuation that the Amanah lawmaker is a bootlicker to DAP while others described him as “a loose dog with a license”.
One commenter teased that the MP should be subject to an urine test – an insinuation that he was drunk to have come out with such insensitive statement – while some faulted Hulu Langat folks to have voted for him in the previous election.
“He hates Malays for not supporting his party,” suggested one commenter.
One commenter refused to believe that Sany has shot off his mouth but purposely did so “to win the hearts of non-Malays”.
One seemingly pro-opposition entrepreneur who happened to be at the observer bench during yesterday’s (Aug 12) debate described Sany’s statement as “very uncivilised” given he even had the audacity to drag Islam into the matter.
“If we want to bar him from entering the Dewan Rakyat, PN (Perikatan Nasional) and BN (Barisan Nasional) must unite to poll 76,056 votes [based on the 2022 general election outcome whereby PH polled 58,362 votes with PN (43,486 votes) and BN (32,570 votes) in a six-corner fight],” observed Kangen Water Terengganu owner Sabri Mamat.
