British labour activist accused of threatening B’deshi journos after M’sian labour mkt meeting

INDEPENDENT British migrant worker rights specialist and advocate Andy Hall has been accused by a Bangladeshi news outlet of threatening journalists and allegedly making racist remarks following media coverage of his recent visit (July 1-5) to Bangladesh.

In the course of his discussions with the relevant authorities in Dhaka on safe migration, ethical recruitment, migrant workers’ rights and Bangladeshi workers’ protection both at home and abroad, he reportedly held discussions with senior government officials on issues linked to the Malaysia-Bangladesh labour migration corridor.

According to Bangladesh-based Daily Tribunal 24, the controversy arose after several media organisations reported on Hall’s meetings with Bangladeshi officials during a visit that coincided with efforts by Malaysia and Bangladesh to move forward with re-opening the Malaysian labour market to Bangladeshi workers.

The publication reported that Hall met Bangladesh’s Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister, the Prime Minister’s special assistant, recruitment agency representatives and NGO officials.

During the discussions, Hall allegedly raised concerns regarding aspects of the Foreign Workers Centralised Management System (FWCMS), a key component of Malaysia’s foreign worker recruitment framework.

Daily Tribunal 24 further reported that Bangladeshi officials rejected Hall’s proposals and maintained their position in favour of re-opening the Malaysian labour market after which discussions allegedly became heated.

Following publication of reports on his visit, the news portal alleged that Hall sent WhatsApp messages to journalists and media executives threatening legal action over their coverage.

‘Legal suit against defamatory remarks’

Among the messages cited by the publication was one in which Hall allegedly wrote: “You shouldn’t pick a fight with me. I’m British and I have white skin. You can try to [expletive] with your own Bangladeshi people but don’t [expletive] with me.”

The news portal characterised the remarks as racist and offensive. It also reported that Hall accused local publications of defamation and indicated that lawyers were preparing legal proceedings.

A prominent labour rights campaigner for more than two decades, Hall is well known for his advocacy on migrant worker issues across Southeast Asia, including Malaysia.

He has frequently been quoted by international media and has worked with civil society organisations on issues relating to recruitment practices, forced labour and migrant worker welfare.

At the time of publication, Hall’s response to the specific allegations reported by Daily Tribunal 24 was not included in the news portal’s report. The allegations have not been independently verified by Malaysian media.

Interestingly, however, another Bangladeshi news portal The Finance Today had on July 9 ran an apology to Hall pertaining to its report entitled “Malaysia Labour Market: Controversy erupts over Andy Hall’s Bangladesh visit”.

Additionally, the news portal had also retracted the said controversial report following a formal protest from Hall who accused it of being “incorrect, misleading and one-sided”.

“We acknowledge that the information published regarding false allegations and wrong intelligence about your misconduct with the Expatriates Welfare & Overseas Employment Ministry was fabricated,” the financial portal’s editor/publisher Md. Motiur Rahman pointed out.

“We deeply regret any harm, reputational damage or distress this oversight has caused you (Hall). We take full responsibility for this error.”

The publication further published in full length Hall’s official statement” to set the record straight” (click the link above to read). – July 12, 2026
