Budget hoteliers want stable gov’t to ensure sustainability of tourism industry

Letter to editor

REFERRING to the current political situation, we would like to call for a stable government to be established as soon as possible to ensure the sustainability and recovery of the hotel and tourism industry which has been severely affected after the COVID-19 pandemic as well as rising challenges in the current economic situation.

Dr Sri Ganesh Michiel

An unstable political situation or government will have an impact on the hotel and tourism industry, especially since it is an industry that should be emphasised by the Malaysian government to help the hotel industry to survive and recover gradually.

We hope that this new government could be effective in solving the threats to the hotel industry especially in introducing a law to regulate the short-term residential accommodation (STRA) and all types of online travel agencies (OTA).

The previous government has failed to resolve threats from the above two industries. We hope that the new government after the 15th General Election (GE15) will be a stable administration which is capable of solving all threats directed at the hotel and tourism industry that have been delayed for so long.

Likewise, we hope that the government of the day will be able to work to get back lost taxes or revenue leakage caused by the above industry threats.

In essence, we call for the new Malaysian Government to pay more attention to the hotel and tourism industry after the recovery of the industry has been affected by various threats to the industry and it will take a long time to return to its strength. – Nov 23, 2022
