BUKIT Gasing state assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran has launched an initiative where Bukit Gasing residents who are unable to afford a smartphone can now purchase it at a subsidised price of RM100 each.
The phones, which are brand new units from brands such as Samsung and Xiaomi, are basic models that support functions such as WhatsApp and Facebook.
According to Rajiv, these phones are worth RM300-RM350 each and come with full warranties.
“We launched our smartphone classes in October and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. It shows the dire need to narrow the digital gap that exists today.
“Most seniors are disadvantaged by not having their own smartphone or by the disability to navigate their devices. So now more than ever, it is important for them to understand the basics,” he remarked.
Rajiv further noted that narrowing the digital gap will help them to stay connected with their friends and family.
“The ability to socialise will help kick away their loneliness and stay in touch with their close ones. Most of them only know how to call and SMS. (So) by getting them to go online, they will be able to share pictures of their daily activities, watch videos and even find their favourite TV shows online,” he explained.
“By staying connected, they are also able to use many services that are available online.
“They are able to order food, call for a taxi or even receive groceries at their doorstep. A step of independence is achieved when they are able to navigate their phones. They can also avoid long queues by paying their bills online.”
The next classes, which are conducted in English, are scheduled to take place on Nov 17 and Nov 21, 2021 at the Majlis Perbandaran Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) Balairaya Seksyen 17 from 10am to 12pm.
