Bursa posts 18th straight weeks of foreign fund exit with elevated net outflow of -RM569m

FOREIGN investors continued their selling spree on Bursa Malaysia for the 18th consecutive week for the Feb 17-21 period with a significantly larger net outflow of -RM562.0 mil compared to -RM203.2 mil in the previous week.

The selling pressure persisted throughout the week with Monday (Feb 17) witnessing the heaviest outflow at -RM189.6 mil, according to MIDF Research.

“The top three sectors that postd net foreign inflows were construction (RM73.4 mil), consumer products & services ((RM47.5 mil) and telecommunication & media (RM26.2 mil),” observed the research house in its weekly fund flow report.

“Meanwhile, the top three sectors that recorded the highest net foreign outflows were healthcare (-RM444.3 mil), utilities (-RM116.0 mil) and financial services (-RM110.4 mil).”

In contrast, local institutions provided steadfast support to the market by marking their 18th successive week of net buying with RM316.3 mil in domestic equities or more than quadrupling last week’s RM77.9 mil net inflow.

Likewise, local retail investors, too, remain net buyers on Bursa Malaysia for two consecutive weeks with a net inflow of RM245.7 mil in equities.

The average daily trading volume (ADTV) saw inclines across the board last week. Foreign investors saw an increase of +9.7% while local institutions and local retailers also saw an increase of +4.7% and +11.3% respectively.

In comparison with another four Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research, only Thailand recorded a modest foreign net inflow of US$64.1 mil to reverse the prior week’s outflow of -US$57.3 mil.

Indonesia posted the biggest net outflow at -US$70.9 mil, its fifth consecutive week of foreign withdrawals while the Philippines encountered a second straight week of foreign net outflow at -US$47.1 mil.

Vietnam recorded the smallest a net outflow at-US$38.5 mil but this nevertheless extended its losing streak to a third week.

The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow from foreign investors last week were IJM Corp Bhd (RM76.3 mil), RHB Bank Bhd (RM53.0 mil) and Sunway Construction Group Bhd (RM39.0 mil). – Feb 24, 2025
