Bursa’s first week 2022 wrap-up: A net outflow of RM62 mil

FOREIGN investor emerged net seller for the week ended Jan 7 – the first week of trading in 2022 – with an outflow amounting to -RM62.15 mil.

As market reopened on Monday (Jan 3) last week, foreign investors bought RM37.35 mil net of local equities with retailers and local institutions being net sellers to the tune of -RM19.28 mil and -RM18.08 mil respectively.

However, foreign investors turned net sellers on Thursday (Jan 6) and Friday (Jan 7) with a combined outflow amounting to -RM141.01 mil. This eventually reversed the total inflow observed on Monday till Wednesday.

The largest foreign inflow was recorded on Monday (Jan 3) at RM37.35 mil while the smallest inflow was on Wednesday (Jan 5) at only RM19.16 mil.

Meanwhile, retailers were active sellers last week except on Thursday (Jan 6) when they recorded an inflow of RM37.61 mil. Their largest net outflow was on Friday (Jan 7) while the smallest was on Tuesday (Jan 4) to the tune of -RM24 mil and -RM15.06 mil respectively.

It was opposite for local institutions who were net buyers except on Monday (Jan 3) and Tuesday (Jan 4). Their largest net buying was recorded on Thursday (Jan 6) at RM83.17 mil while their largest net selling was on Monday (Jan 3) at -RM18.08 mil.

Overall, local institutions finished strong as net buyers at RM103.84 mil for the first week of 2022 while retailers and foreign investors were net sellers at -RM41.69 mil and -RM62.15 mil.

In terms of participation the retail investors, local institutions and the foreign investors recorded a weekly movement of 21.18%, 3% and 19.16% respectively in terms of average daily trade value (ADTV).

In comparison with another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Thailand recorded an inflow amounting to US$1.89 bil from foreign investors while Indonesia posted the biggest outflow with -US$2.54 bil followed by Malaysia (-US$14.61 mil) and the Philippines (-US$2.2 mil).
