FOREIGN investors continued to be the net buyer of Malaysian equities for the week ended May 28 with an inflow of RM190.2 mil.
This was the second inflow registered after nine consecutive weeks of net outflows.
As the market reopened last Monday (May 24), foreign investors sold -RM43.6 mil net of local equities – the only outflow for the week – with retailers and local institutions emerging net buyers and net sellers to the tune of RM50.3 mil and -RM6.7 mil respectively.
“Foreign investors were net buyers every day except for Monday (May 24),” observed MIDF Research in its weekly fund flow report. “The largest foreign inflow was recorded on Friday (May 28) at RM113.3 mil while the smallest inflow was on Tuesday (May 25) at RM20.5 mil).”
As for the retailers, they were net buyers every day of the week. The largest net buying by the retailers was on Monday (May 24) at RM50.3 mil while the smallest was on Friday (May 28) at RM15.3 mil.
Cumulatively, retailers net bought RM147.9 mil worth of equities in Bursa Malaysia during the week.
Meanwhile, the cumulative weekly outflow of local institutions was to the tune of -RM338.1 mil.
Their biggest net selling was on Thursday (May 27) at -RM137.9 mil while their smallest net selling happened on Monday (May 24) at -RM6.7 mil.
Since the beginning of 2021, retailers are cumulatively the only net buyers in the local bourse to the tune of RM6.5 bil. Local institutions and foreign investors were net sellers to the tune of -RM3.4 bil and -RM3.1 bil respectively.
In terms of participation, retail investors recorded a weekly decrease of -2.4% while, local institutions, and foreign investors recorded a weekly increase of +6.4% and +101.9% respectively in average daily trade value (ADTV).
In comparison to another three Southeast Asian markets tracked by MIDF Research last week, Indonesia and Malaysia were the only markets which posted net inflow with US$138.58 mil and US$45.99 mil while Thailand recorded the biggest outflow at US$226.01 mil followed by the Philippines at US$149.68 mil.
The top three stocks with the highest net money inflow last week were Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Bhd (RM3.68 mil), Genting Bhd (RM2.73 mil) and Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (RM2.49). – May 31, 2021
