Cash-rich fishing competition goes viral for RM200,000 prize money

WHEN fishing is mentioned, people undoubtedly come to the conclusion that it is either a recreational sport or the profession itself which isn’t glamorous and lucrative.

But it appears fishing is getting a brand new image where a recent viral video showed the winner of a fishing contest catching a prize of RM200,000. Yes, you read it correctly. RM200,000 in cold hard cash to be exact.

Netizens, however, expressed their skepticism about the prize money, with some claiming that it was akin to gambling.

Several others pointed out that the money was derived from the fees paid by the other participants.

@Abuthoh said those who believed in the prize was foolish, while @bossfarhan97 said he followed the competition for many years, that the winners are usually from the gang members of the organiser.

Note that the organiser was Den Kolam Pancing Kuala Selangor, which has quite a substantial following.

A quick skim through the social media of the organiser showed huge prizes being won by the participants, take for example, a motorcycle by a boy who caught a 8.8kg catfish.

On a lower level, the organiser also published a cash prize of RM5,000 for first place, RM2,000 for second and RM1,000 for a separate competition.

The prizes for the lucky draw was equally astounding, ranging from a Honda Odyssey, a new motorcycle, handphone and even a gold necklace. Believable?

Perhaps the winning comment goes to @aqmalhakim who said, “This is why we have the proverb that if we want to help people, don’t give them a fish. Give them a fishing rod and teach them to fish. See, he caught a RM200,000 prize.”

Another netizen said the prize money could even beat the prize money of professional sports. Now might be the best time to keep our rackets and football and quickly head over to the fishing store for some fresh, stinky bait.

Also, @madnurrrr lightly teased that the winner will have many friends later.

“Those friends who never talked to him will suddenly come over and want to be friends,” claims @amirvevo_. —May 6, 2025
