Cheah Liek Hou nabs first gold for Malaysia in Paris Paralympics 2024

HISTORY was made with para-badminton player Cheah Liek Hou when he scored Malaysia’s first gold medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024.

He beat Suryo Nugroho from Indonesia at the finals with a score of 21-17,21-15.

Cheah, 36, demonstrated his experience by staying composed throughout both matches, successfully defending the gold medal he won at Tokyo 2020.

In contrast, Suryo seemed to struggle with a right knee injury, which was strapped, and frequently called for the trainer during the match.

The post on X by Irfan_newboys which carried the great news was swept up by netizens on cyberspace, with over 14,000 reposts and most of the comments congratulating Cheah.

Awed by his skills, one netizen even suggested that he compete in a normal badminton tournament. Maybe he would prove successful there too.

Looking at his performance, we can’t help but encourage him to give it a try. Netizen thejamal cheekily suggested that Cheah receive a Datukship title as well as a quick pension.

While we are supportive of the Datukship, we strongly believe Cheah has many, many more opportunities to contribute to Malaysia’s excellence in the arena of sports.

Another netizen said it was touching to witness Cheah’s victory especially when she who is physically fit is not even able to achieve such a feat.

Not only has Cheah successfully defended his men’s singles SU5 (physical impairment) gold medal, he is the eight-time world champion in the SU5 (physical impairment) men’s singles para-badminton category. – Sept 3, 2024
