Consult Perikatan before calling for general election, Muhyiddin tells PM

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob must consult Perikatan Nasional (Perikatan) before making any decision on dissolving the Parliament, said his predecessor Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“Yesterday, top Perikatan leaders had a meeting with Ismail Sabri at Seri Perdana, followed by an iftar session.

“The prime minister stressed on the value Perikatan brings to the federal administration and promised to discuss with us in enacting national policies.

“And I have reminded Ismail Sabri that Perikatan, as a partner in the Government, must be consulted before deciding on dissolving the Parliament,” he said, in a Facebook post.

Following the massive successes enjoyed by the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition in the Melaka and Johor state elections, Ismail Sabri has been under pressure from several UMNO leaders to call for a general election.

However, the Bera MP has so far resisted it citing that the country was still facing COVID-19 and the economic downturn triggered by the pandemic.

In the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Government and Opposition, the latter had promised to back Ismail Sabri as long as the latter meet several demands, which includes limiting the tenure of prime minister to two terms and enacting the anti-hopping law. – April 10, 2022
