Courier boy earns RM6,000 a month in viral video. Believable or bullshit?

IS it really necessary for people to get a degree nowadays? If a school leaver with a motorcycle license can earn up to RM6,000 working as a courier, perhaps people should consider a higher salary in the corporate world.

In a video post on X by netizen amighul deghaman, it has come to light that work as a simple courier could nab one about RM6,000 per month, or about RM1.70 per parcel. But how true is that?

The post has since drawn the attention of a good deal of netizens, with many of them expressing skepticism towards the amount one could receive as a courier.

One netizen said it is possible for people to get a high income with such a job. However, there will be no career growth. Also, the work depends on the number of parcels.

“If the company suddenly hires many people, then it is over. If you are suddenly sick, there is no income,” he said, further pointing out that there is no paid leave, and that even on holidays, one must think about work.

Netizen MOHAMEDYUSOF said if one parcel takes a duration of 5 minutes, 150 parcel would take over 12 hours non stop. He said this is a scam, cautioning people not to believe in it.

“Even I need to borrow money from my wife when I need to change the chains of my motor,” he added for good measure.

Hachimi said it was easier to drop parcels at one drop point such as a university or college, unlike at a residential area. 100 parcels can be delivered at one spot unlike 100 parcels to 100 houses.

Another netizen cautioned that not every place has the same rate of RM1.70. The majority of places only provide RM1.20 per parcel.

Netizen Raja Bersiong said this is all talk, stating that the average pay of a courier boy is within RM3,000 to RM5,500.

“The minimum parcel delivered in one day is 150, with work at 10 to 12 hours,” he said, adding that it is not possible to get 200 to 300 parcels delivered in five to seven hours.

Raja Bersiong said he is betting that the person is delivering only at the condo areas, and selected routes only.

However, the video failed to point out that said couriers also need to brave the rain, sunshine and dangers on the road, being a motorcycle rider.

Is RM6,000 the gross amount? These riders are also not entitled to paid leaves, not considering the maintenance cost yet to be called in due to the wear and tear on the motorcycle.
