COVID-19: 4,744 new cases – highest in 47 days

THE Health Ministry reported 4,744 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday (Jan 26), an increase from the 4,066 cases recorded the day before. 

This brings the cumulative infections in the country to 2,844,969. 

In a statement, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that of the new COVID-19 cases, 4,714 (99.4%) were mild and asymptomatic infections in Categories one and two, while the remaining 30 (0.6%) were from Categories three, four and five. 

Categories one and two refer to patients with mild symptoms or none at all, category three refers to patients with pneumonia, while patients in categories four and five require oxygen and need ventilators, respectively. 

As of yesterday, the national infectivity rate has also broken the 1.0 threshold and is now at 1.09. 

States and territories with an R-naught above 1.0 are Negeri Sembilan (1.13), Johor (1.10), Kedah (1.09), Kuala Lumpur (1.07), Selangor (1.05), Penang (1.03), Melaka (1.03), Sabah (1.01), Pahang (1.01), Kelantan (1.00) and Perak (1.00). 

An R-naught of 1.00 suggests an outbreak that has plateaued, while a figure above that indicates an outbreak that is accelerating its growth. 

Meanwhile, according to the CovidNow website, 3,646 patients have recovered, bringing the total to 2,766,254. 

There were 12 deaths, with two brought in dead (BID) case recorded for the day, thus bringing the death tally to 31,930. 

Of the current cases, 129 cases required treatment in intensive care units (ICU) and 72 cases needed respiratory assistance. – Jan 27, 2022
