COVID-19: 4,885 new cases, R-naught at 1.00

MALAYSIA has recorded 4,885 new COVID-19 cases on Monday (Nov 22), a slight increase from the 4,854 cases reported on the day before.

This brings the cumulative infections in the country to 2,591,486.

In a statement, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham said that of the new COVID-19 cases, 4,794 (98.1%) were mild and asymptomatic infections in Categories one and two, while the remaining 91 (1.9%) were from Categories three, four and five.

Categories one and two refer to patients with mild symptoms or none at all, category three refers to patients with pneumonia, while patients in categories four and five require oxygen and need ventilators, respectively.

As of yesterday, the R-naught for the country is 1.00.

An R-naught of more than 1.00 would suggest that the spread of COVID-19 is accelerating.

The R-naught is above 1.00 in Selangor, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Pahang, Perak and Terengganu.

The lowest R-naught is in Sarawak (0.84).

Meanwhile, according to the CovidNow website, 5,628 patients have recovered, bringing the total to 2,493,437.

There were 63 deaths, including 13 that were brought in dead (BID), thus bringing the death tally to 30,063.

Of the current cases, 549 cases required treatment in intensive care units (ICU) and 274 cases needed respiratory assistance. – Nov 23, 2021
