COVID-19: 4,915 new cases, R-naught at 1.14

THE Health Ministry reported 4,915 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday (Jan 30), a decrease from the 5,139 cases recorded the day before.

This brings the cumulative infections in the country to 2,865,984.

In a statement, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that of the new COVID-19 cases, 4,876 (99.2%) of the cases were Categories 1 and 2, while 39 (0.8%) were from Categories 3, 4 and 5 at the time of diagnosis.

Categories one and two refer to patients with mild symptoms or none at all, category three refers to patients with pneumonia, while patients in categories four and five require oxygen and need ventilators, respectively.

As of yesterday, the national infectivity rate has also broken the 1.0 threshold and is now at 1.14.

States and territories with an R-naught above 1.0 are Negeri Sembilan (1.20), Putrajaya (1.20), Kedah (1.18), Perlis (1.16), Johor (1.15), Melaka (1.13), Kuala Lumpur (1.13), Selangor (1.10), Pulau Pinang (1.07), Kelantan (1.07), Sabah (1.04), Perak (1.04), Pahang (1.03) and Sarawak (1.00).

An R-naught of 1.00 suggests an outbreak that has plateaued, while a figure above that indicates an outbreak that is accelerating its growth.

Meanwhile, according to the CovidNow website, 3, 056 patients have recovered, bringing the total to 2,780,771.

There were eight deaths, with one brought in dead (BID) case recorded for the day, thus bringing the death tally to 31,965.

Of the current cases, 120 cases required treatment in intensive care units (ICU) and 65 cases needed respiratory assistance.

Dr Noor Hisham added that there were 14 new clusters reported today. – Jan 31, 2022
