COVID-19: 5,434 fresh cases, 72 deaths recorded

MALAYSIA has logged 5,434 new COVID-19 infections on Monday (Oct 18) – the lowest since June 28, 2021 when 5,218 cases were recorded.

This is the 16th straight day that new cases stayed below the 10,000 mark – down 11.57% from 6,145 the day before.

To date, the country’s cumulative coronavirus infections stood at 2,396,121, according to a tweet by Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Of the latest infections, only 151 or 2.8% were serious, involving those in Categories 3 (patients with pneumonia), 4 (patients with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and 5 (critical patients requiring assisted ventilation).

The remaining 5,283 cases or 97.2% involved people who showed no symptoms or mild symptoms (Categories 1 and 2).

According to the Health Ministry’s CovidNow website, 8,435 patients have recovered, with the total discharge now standing at 2,278,955.

There were 72 deaths recorded, bringing the death tally to 27,993.

Of the current cases, 679 cases required treatment in intensive care units and 347 cases needed respiratory assistance. – Oct 19, 2021.
