THE Health Ministry reported 5,439 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday (Jan 27), an increase from the 4,744 cases recorded the day before.
This brings the cumulative infections in the country to 2,850,408.
In a statement, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that of the new COVID-19 cases, only 0.9% were Category 3, 4 and 5 cases at the time of diagnosis.
Categories one and two refer to patients with mild symptoms or none at all, category three refers to patients with pneumonia, while patients in categories four and five require oxygen and need ventilators, respectively.
As of yesterday, the national infectivity rate has also broken the 1.0 threshold and is now at 1.13.
States and territories with an R-naught above 1.0 are Negeri Sembilan (1.18), Kedah (1.14), Johor (1.12), Kuala Lumpur (1.07), Selangor (1.07), Melaka (1.06), Kelantan (1.04), Penang (1.02), Sabah (1.02), Pahang (1.02), Putrajaya (1.01) and Perak (1.00).
An R-naught of 1.00 suggests an outbreak that has plateaued, while a figure above that indicates an outbreak that is accelerating its growth.
Meanwhile, according to the CovidNow website, 4,409 patients have recovered, bringing the total to 2,770,663.
There were 10 deaths, with three brought in dead (BID) case recorded for the day, thus bringing the death tally to 31,940.
Of the current cases, 124 cases required treatment in intensive care units (ICU) and 70 cases needed respiratory assistance.
Dr Noor Hisham added that there were 22 new clusters reported today. – Jan 28, 2022
