THE Health Ministry reported 13,944 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday (Feb 8), an increase from the 11,034 cases recorded the day before.
This is the third consecutive day that the number of cases has breached the 10,000 mark.
The latest development brought the cumulative infections in the country to 2,939,198.
In a statement, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that of the new COVID-19 cases, 13,871 (99.5%) of the cases were Categories 1 and 2, while 73 (0.5%) were from Categories 3, 4 and 5 at the time of diagnosis.
Categories one and two refer to patients with mild symptoms or none at all, category three refers to patients with pneumonia, while patients in categories four and five require oxygen and need ventilators, respectively.
As of yesterday, the national infectivity rate has also broken the 1.0 threshold and is now at 1.32.
States and territories with an R-naught above 1.0 are Sabah (1.54), Perlis (1.54), Sarawak (1.48), Terengganu (1.36), Kedah (1.32), Putrajaya (1.29), Pulau Pinang (1.25), Johor (1.24), Pahang (1.24), Selangor (1.23), Melaka (1.23), Perak (1.23), Kelantan (1.16), Negri Sembilan (1.12) and Kuala Lumpur (1.09).
An R-naught of 1.00 suggests an outbreak that has plateaued, while a figure above that indicates an outbreak that is accelerating its growth.
Meanwhile, according to the CovidNow website, 5,421 patients have recovered, bringing the total to 2,824,071.
There were 13 deaths, with three brought in dead (BID) cases recorded for the day, thus bringing the death tally to 32,056.
Of the current cases, 138 cases required treatment in intensive care units (ICU) and 71 cases needed respiratory assistance.
Dr Noor Hisham added that there were 17 new clusters reported today. – Feb 9, 2022
