COVID-19: Cases hit 4k mark ahead of Aidiladha, highest since April

MALAYSIA is experiencing a surge in the number of COVID-19 infections in the week preceding Hari Raya Aidiladha this Sunday just days after the Health Ministry (MOH) had issued a warning about two new sub-variants of the Omicron strain.

Malaysia recorded 4,020 Covid-19 cases yesterday (July 7), highlighting a steady rise in the number of cases over the past few days.

This comes as 1,918 cases were recorded on Monday, 2,932 on Tuesday and 3,561 on Wednesday.

Currently the total number of COVID-19 cases stands at 4,586,322.

According to the CovidNow website, this also marks the first time that more than 4,000 cases have been recorded in a day after 4,006 cases were recorded on April 24.

Yesterday’s infections comprised 4,011 local cases and nine imported cases.

Overall, there has been a 25% increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country over the past week.

As at 11.59pm on July 7, there were 33,839 active cases with 1,156 people hospitalised. Of this, 45 were in intensive care units (ICU), with 23 ventilated.

The country also recorded 1,719 recoveries yesterday.

There were three deaths, with two of them classified as brought in dead (BID).

The death toll stands at 35,795.

Yesterday, Bernama reported Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin as saying that the public must continue to be cautious when celebrating Hari Raya Aidiladha this week to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Khairy, through his official Twitter account today, told people to wear a face mask when being in enclosed or crowded areas, besides practising the TRIIS (test, report, isolate, inform, seek) method.

He also urged those who are returning to their villages to do a self-test. – July 8, 2022
