COVID-19: Continued uptick in number of cases, 6,602 recoveries

MALAYSIA has recorded 6,144 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday (Nov 25), an increase from the number of cases reported on the day before.

This brings the cumulative infections in the country to 2,608,979.

The national R-naught had dipped to 0.99 yesterday when cases were at 5,755. This is the first time in nearly two weeks where the number is less than 1.00.

However, there were still 11 states and federal territories with an R-naught higher than 1.00 namely Selangor, Sabah, Johor, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Pahang and Perak.

An R-naught of more than 1.00 suggests that the spread of COVID-19 was accelerating.

In a statement, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham said that of the new COVID-19 cases, 6,048 (98.4%) were mild and asymptomatic infections in Categories one and two, while the remaining 96 (1.6%) were from Categories three, four and five.

Categories one and two refer to patients with mild symptoms or none at all, category three refers to patients with pneumonia, while patients in categories four and five require oxygen and need ventilators, respectively.

Meanwhile, according to the CovidNow website, 6,602 patients have recovered, bringing the total to 2,510,029.

There were 48 deaths, including 10 that were brought in dead (BID), thus bringing the death tally to 30,195.

Of the current cases, 516 cases required treatment in intensive care units (ICU) and 272 cases needed respiratory assistance. – Nov 26, 2021
