COVID-19: Daily cases breached 10k mark, first time since Oct 2021

THE Health Ministry reported 10,089 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday (Feb 6), an increase from the 9,117 cases recorded the day before. 

The last time Malaysia recorded new COVID-19 cases of above 10,000 was on Oct 2 last year with 10,915 cases. 

This brings the cumulative infections in the country to 2,914,220. 

In a statement, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that of the new COVID-19 cases, 10,012 (99.24%) of the cases were Categories 1 and 2, while 77 (0.76%) were from Categories 3, 4 and 5 at the time of diagnosis. 

Categories one and two refer to patients with mild symptoms or none at all, category three refers to patients with pneumonia, while patients in categories four and five require oxygen and need ventilators, respectively. 

As of yesterday, the national infectivity rate has also broken the 1.0 threshold and is now at 1.20. 

States and territories with an R-naught above 1.0 are Perlis (1.49), Sabah (1.41), Putrajaya (1.29), Kedah (1.22), Selangor (1.19), Penang (1.17), Sarawak (1.17), Johor (1.16), Pahang (1.14), Terengganu (1.13), Kuala Lumpur (1.12), Melaka (1.11), Negri Sembilan (1.10), Perak (1.10) and Kelantan (1.08). 

An R-naught of 1.00 suggests an outbreak that has plateaued, while a figure above that indicates an outbreak that is accelerating its growth. 

Meanwhile, according to the CovidNow website, 6,460 patients have recovered, bringing the total to 2,812,614. 

There were nine deaths, with two brought in dead (BID) cases recorded for the day, thus bringing the death tally to 32,034. 

Of the current cases, 137 cases required treatment in intensive care units (ICU) and 71 cases needed respiratory assistance.  

Dr Noor Hisham added that there were 11 new clusters reported today. – Feb 7, 2022
