COVID-19: Downward trend in new infections, infectivity rate reduced

THE Health Ministry (MOH) has reported 1,555 COVID-19 cases and six deaths in the past 24 hours.

In a statement today, Health Ministry’s director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also said that there were 2,528 recoveries, bringing the total number of those recovered to 278,431.

He also noted that 1,552 cases were locally transmitted where 1,108 or 71.4% of them were locals and 444 (28.6%) were foreigners.

Currently, there are 24,563 active COVID-19 cases nationwide, of which 204 COVID-19 patients are in intensive care unit (ICU) with 96 requiring ventilator support.

Selangor continues to record the highest number of cases with 672 infections, followed by Johor (163) and Sarawak (159).

Meanwhile, the movement control order (MCO) placed on four states – Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang – will be switched to conditional MCO, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The CMCO will take effect for 14 days beginning March 5.

According to Ismail Sabri, the call to lift the MCO followed by data suggesting a downward trend in COVID-19 infection rate. The Ministry of Health had informed The National Security Council has been informed by MOH that the R-nought, measure of infectivity rate, has reduced from 1.2 to 0.8.

In addition, clusters and cases in the community have also been dropping, the Senior Minister explained at media briefing broadcasted ‘live’ on television.

Ismail Sabri also added that Melaka, Pahang, Terengganu, Sabah, Putrajaya, Labuan and Perlis will be under recovery MCO (RMCO) while Kedah, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Sarawak and Perak remain under CMCO.

“Inter-district travel within a state will be allowed, with the exception of Sabah. However, inter-state travel will still not be allowed yet,” the Senior Minister announced. – March 2, 2021
