COVID-19: Establish select committee to address rising numbers

WE need to establish a Parliamentary select committee to address the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

“We are recording four-digit new infection cases daily, with 1,937 new infections yesterday, which brings our total number to 82,246 cases to date.

“This surge has added urgency to establish a select committee on the COVID19 pandemic. Plus, we need to address vaccination issues as well.

“I urge Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun to convene an urgent meeting to establish a select committee on the pandemic,” said Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang, in a statement today.

Malaysia has been hitting four-digit new COVID-19 infection cases on a daily basis since late last month, with the number breaching the 2,000 mark several times.

Yesterday, former Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad urged his successor and the Selangor state government to continue with its pro-active and aggressive testing for COVID-19, particularly on migrant workers.

He also urged authorities and the public to stop using the daily COVID-19 updates as a scoreboard to measure success and failures.

To date, Selangor counts for nearly half of the daily new infection cases.

Lim said the proposed select committee could meet after the Dewan Rakyat adjourns on Thursday, to conduct public hearings on why the COVID-19 cases are soaring.

“The authorities had failed to adopt an ‘all-of-government’ and ‘whole-of-society’ approach which resulted in the spike in COVID-19 cases,” he claimed.

The DAP leader then named Dzulkefly to chair the proposed committee, adding that other members should be of those with expertise to deal with the pandemic.

“If Malaysia’s daily cases breaches the 2,000 mark daily from now on, then we will overtake China’s numbers by next week,” Lim added. – Dec 13, 2020.
