COVID-19: M’sia breaches 2k mark again, healthcare staff got careless

THE Health Ministry reported 2,018 new COVID-19 cases and one death in the past 24 hours.

Speaking in a press conference, Health Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the nation also recorded 1,084 recoveries, bringing the total number discharged to 78,393.

“The total number of infections now is at 95,327. Unfortunately, one person lost his life to the virus today, bringing the fatality tally to 438,” he said.

Selangor itself registered 1,204 new infection cases.

The deceased was a 50-year-old foreigner who did not have any pre-existing medical condition.  He died at Hospital Tuaran in Sabah.

Noor Hisham said the Government has also detected eight new clusters in the country.

“The clusters are Pekapuri, Batu Besar and Tower (Selangor); Pelangi construction site, Wawasan and Delima (Kuala Lumpur), J Bandar cluster (Labuan), and the May Indah (Penang),” he added.

On related matter, Noor Hisham said the spike in COVID-19 cases in certain hospitals happened as several healthcare workers went to work despite exhibiting symptoms of contracting the virus.

He also said some of them even failed to wear masks while at work.

“They should have taken medical leave instead of coming to the hospital for work since COVID-19 infections were getting serious in the community.

“So, infections started to happen in the hospitals. I would to remind all, especially health workers, to follow the standard operating procedures (SOP),” said Noor Hisham.

To date, Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Klang has 122 cases while Sungai Buloh Hospital reported 80 infections. – Dec 21, 2020.
