COVID-19: New infection on upward trend again; KL enters MCO on Friday

THE number of new infections continue to rise as Health Ministry director general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah announced that the nation recorded 3,744 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total to 424,376.

In a tweet, he also said that 2,304 patients have been cured, with the total discharged now stands at 389,846.

“Seventeen people have died today, bringing the death tally to 1,591,” he added.

Currently, there are 32,939 active COVID-19 cases in the country, in which 328 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) with 185 requiring ventilator support.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases again (1,548), followed by Kelantan (480) and Sarawak (419).

On a related matter, Dr Noor Hisham announced that his ministry has detected 20 new clusters in the country.

Meanwhile, according to Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur will be placed under the movement control order (MCO) from May 7 to 20 due to a rise in daily infections. Furthermore, the capital city has recorded a total of 2,717 new clusters since April 1.

In addition, several localities in Johor, Perak and Terengganu will also be placed under MCO from May 7 to 20 following a hike of COVID-19 cases in those areas.

The localities are Johor Baru, Kulai and Kota Tinggi in Johor, Taiping, Larut Matang and Selama in Perak and parts of Terengganu’s Besut district. – May 5, 2021
