COVID-19: Number of active cases shrink below 3k but active cases still above 50k mark

THE Health Ministry has reported 2,764 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours.

Since the movement control order (MCO 2.0) started on January 13, this it the first time the number of new COVID-19 infections dipped below 3,000.

In a statement today, Health Ministry’s director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also said that there were 3,887 recoveries, bringing the total number of those recovered to 196,566.

He also noted that 2,758 cases were local transmissions while the rest are imported infections.

“For now, the total number of infections stands at 248,316. Unfortunately, 13 people have lost their lives to the virus, bringing the total number of fatalities to 909,” he said.

Currently, there are 50,841 active COVID-19 cases in the country while 289 COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU) with 127 requiring ventilator support.

Selangor continues to record the highest number of cases with 862 infections, followed by Johor (521) and Kuala Lumpur (422). – Feb 9, 2021
