Crack the whip those selling RON95 to foreigners, Najib tells Gov’t

WITH photos of foreigners purchasing RON95 fuel going viral, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak urged the Government to take action immediately.

“Pictures of foreigners purchasing our subsidised RON95 fuel in Malaysian petrol stations are going viral. I must state that the fuel type is listed as controlled item as it is highly subsidised.

“And selling products listed under the Price Control Act to foreigners is illegal,” he said, in a Facebook post.

Both the Malaysian and Singaporean Governments reopened their borders to allow residents to travel to and fro again; two years after borders were closed due to COVID-19.

With many sighing relief as they could now be with their loved ones again, pictures are going viral showing people driving vehicles with Singapore plate numbers filling up their tanks using RON95.

On that note, Najib said that RON95 is being sold at RM2.05 a litre in Malaysia, which is 11th lowest price in the world.

Lose RM68 for every 40 litres

He added that Malaysia was selling RON 95 at a cheaper rate even compared to large oil producing countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Jordan and Oman.

“Malaysia allows foreigners to purchase only RON97 here, priced at RM3.91 per litre. It’s still cheaper than our neighbouring country which sells it at S$3.02 (RM9.37) and S$3.51 (RM10.90) for RON97 as they impose high tax on petrol.

“But in Malaysia, RON95 is subsidised at RM1.70 a litre. If foreigners are allowed to buy it, we will lose RM68 for every 40 litres of the fuel purchased,” the Pekan MP explained.

Najib remarked: “With our borders reopening, I urge the authorities and petrol stations to pay attention to the matter and take appropriate action.” – April 3, 2022
