Customers unconvinced by OLDTOWN’s reaction to its stinging butter & ‘kaya’ toast stunner

SPEECHLESS entrepreneur-cum-business coach Ernie Chen took his frustration to the social media after being served his favourite butter & kaya (coconut jam) toast with two minuscule slices of butter on each side of his bread.

“Look at my face!” he penned on his Facebook (FB) page recently. “This is why OLDTOWN (White Coffee) that had the first mover advantage that once dominated the modernised kopitiam comfort has totally lost out today and suck at what they once did so well in!”

Added Chen of the franchise business: “Why does OLDTOWN even still exist? This is called No Brain Butter Kaya Toast! Bye for life OLDTOWN!

After Chen’s plight was featured on the “Meanwhile in Malaysia” Facebook page – which saw netizens hurling brickbats and insults – OLDTOWN has swiftly responded by ensuring that “all necessary steps have been taken as we take pride in our food quality and the service that we provide to OLDTOWN customers”.

“OLDTOWN White Coffee would like to thank our customers and the media for highlighting the issue that has been viral on social media recently to us. We take all our customers’ feedback seriously,” the self-proclaimed authentic kopitiam pointed out on its Facebook page.

“We have reached out to the said customer and this matter has been addressed with the customer.”

But OLDTOWN’s positive reaction could be a tad too late for social media can work as a double-edged sword as a food review platform. In other words, the damage has been done.

Here are some darndest feedback from OLDTOWN’s former, current and potential customers after “Meanwhile in Malaysia” posted a Chen’s plight on its FB page: – May 12, 2023
