WHEN you are but a child, everything may look and sound difficult unless it is sucking your thumb.
Recently a viral video has surfaced showing a group of first year students gingerly climbing down the stairs.
They either held on to their friends or the side rail, cutely taking one slow step at a time.
Being young and separated from the safe space that are their parents, even the simplest of actions would prove herculean.
Kerenah murid tahun 1. Ramai juga yang masih takut nak turun tangga. Cikgu dah kena tambah kelas ‘turun tangga’ lepasni.
Mungkin seminggu je kan macamni… 🤔 pic.twitter.com/m7agJAWMZN

The online community, however, were confident that this behaviour will last for a few weeks at most.
“In a week time, they will all be running,” said 𝐚𝐲𝐮¨̮ while another netizen claimed that they will jump down from the top.
“A long time ago when I sent my standard one little brother, he does that too, fearfully holding the rails down the stairs as he walked slowly,” said fumi007.
Netizen 卂乃ㄩ added that he once slide down the stairs using his bag which had wheels.
The comment section took a turn into comedy with ƒαιζ stating that the stairs should be made like a piano.
“The kids will like it when the stairs light up, and especially if there is sound when they step on it,” he said.
Nasihin further claimed that the children lived in landed homes, that they were unaccustomed to climbing down the stairs.
The winning comment, however, goes to sukahati who jokingly said, “When they reach the bottom, recess is already over.”
Also, Ami Salwani observed that the children behave in such a manner as their vestibular system has yet to be fully developed. Are there any doctor or scientist in the house to confirm this?
Then there was netizen Kancil Hybrid who said this was what happened when they watched too much stuff on their handphone, which had a way of screwing up their brains.
Prompted by their difficulty, netizens suggested that the classes for standard one students be held at the ground floor instead to prevent any incident as well as to promote safety.
On another note, several others pointed out that it was not right to show a video recording of the kids’ faces without being censored as it infringed on their privacy.
Away from all the reminiscing, jokes and theories, we would like to view those children climbing down the stairs as a metaphor.
Today, they may be but kids learning their ABC or colouring snails on a colouring book.
Tomorrow, they might be the leaders who lead this great nation to a greater tomorrow. It all starts with that first baby step. —Feb 24, 2025
